to it . Our vessel , the RRS James Clark Ross ( often abbreviated to the JCR ) is sitting alongside a jetty in Port Stanley , alongside a Faeroese krill ship . Apart from ourselves , the Hamburg and the krill ship , there are no other big ships , the only other one being a wreck about a quarter of a mile away .

We ’ ve already seen some wildlife ! A group of us went out to a nearby penguin colony yesterday evening and saw gentoo and magellanic penguins , some on the beach , some in burrows . At a beach about a mile away you can sit on the white sands and watch dark grey albatrosses ( at least according to a very tentative identification from a non-bird-watcher – they were certainly large birds with larger wingspans than any in the UK !) skimming across the bay and overhead . Magical .

Tomorrow we will get underway . Tides are not suitable in the morning so we plan to depart at 1pm . The Southern Ocean awaits …
