to it. Our vessel, the RRS James Clark Ross( often abbreviated to the JCR) is sitting alongside a jetty in Port Stanley, alongside a Faeroese krill ship. Apart from ourselves, the Hamburg and the krill ship, there are no other big ships, the only other one being a wreck about a quarter of a mile away.

We’ ve already seen some wildlife! A group of us went out to a nearby penguin colony yesterday evening and saw gentoo and magellanic penguins, some on the beach, some in burrows. At a beach about a mile away you can sit on the white sands and watch dark grey albatrosses( at least according to a very tentative identification from a non-bird-watcher – they were certainly large birds with larger wingspans than any in the UK!) skimming across the bay and overhead. Magical.

Tomorrow we will get underway. Tides are not suitable in the morning so we plan to depart at 1pm. The Southern Ocean awaits …
