As Frances and Colin have mentioned we have moved north away from the ice into stormier but slightly warmer water – the temperature is about 3 ° C rather than around 0 ° C. The whales and penguins obviously preferred the ice margin but albatrosses and more importantly from our point of view the microscopic phytoplankton seem to prefer it here.
So I have spent most of my time looking down the microscope rather than outside but here are a few images of the most common albatross today the Black-Browned Albatross. They are not as large as the Wandering Albatross but are particularly elegant.
