certainly not a pleasant moment, but luckily we have a really good electronics guy on the ship, Mark Preston, who managed to rewire the whole instrument which is now in perfect working order.
Aside from big, catastrophic( at the time at least!) issues like this there are always small pieces of equipment that need eadjusting or replacing. Coming to sea with complex instruments like the ones in our lab is certainly the equivalent to a masters degree in troubleshooting!
