As this first experiment will use seawater collected in the Drake ’ s Passage , we expect to encounter the nutrient-rich , but low biomass water typical of large areas of the Southern Ocean that lack the essential iron that is vital for phytoplankton growth . Hopefully , this will now all happen tomorrow instead .
For most people , today is an unexpected day off . And for some , the additional day is somewhat of a blessing , allowing further time to tweak instruments and methods , and get things working optimally before the first experiment really does start .
