can be very gruesome . Katherine George , of the World Society for the Protection of Animals ( WSPA ) says , โ€œ All available evidence tells us there is no way to hunt and kill whales at sea without causing intense suffering . Poor weather conditions and movements of the boat and whales make it impossible to ensure a single lethal shot at sea . Whales can suffer for up to an hour before they succumb to the harpoons and rifles of the hunters . Marine mammals are sentient beings with the ability to suffer both physically and psychologically .โ€ Basically what she is saying is that it is very hard to make a clean shot . Whales have feelings too , and they can suffer intensely for hours before they die . Whaling can be stopped though . Many organizations are against whaling , and organizations such as Greenpeace will put themselves in danger to save whales .
Whaling has many disadvantages .ยท
โ— What is the process of commercial whaling ?
Whalers often had to go on voyages to find whales . When commercial whaling first started , the longest voyages were only a few weeks . As time went on and whales went further from the shore , voyages got longer and longer . The longest ever recorded was a total of 11 years .
v Whaling Tools of the Past
When whaling first began , whales were killed with handheld lances and manually thrown harpoons ( which are barbed spears ). In 1731 , a gun was created by a whaler that shot harpoons . In the 1860s , guns were created to shoot harpoons with explosive heads .
