How Do They Work?
A hybrid vehicle is a car that has two engines. One engine is a gasoline engine and one engine is an electric engine. The gasoline engine is the primary source of power and the electric engine is the secondary source of power.
What types are there?
There are three types of hybrids. There are Full Hybrids, Mild Hybrids, and Start / Stop
Hybrids. A Full Hybrid is a hybrid that uses a gasoline engine as the main source of power. They use electric engines for low-speed driving or for extra propulsion. A Mild Hybrid is a hybrid that uses a smaller gasoline engine as its main source of power and an electric engine for accelerating or passing. They make their own energy through regenerative braking. This removes the requirement for them to be plugged in. A Start / Stop Hybrid is not a true hybrid because
it doesn’ t have an electric engine. It turns the engine off when the car is not moving, for example at a red light. The engine will then turn back on automatically when the driver pushes on the pedal.
Do Hybrid Vehicles Help?
Traditional gasoline vehicles are harmful to the environment. Hybrid vehicles benefit the environment by reducing the use of the gasoline engine. According to proponents, standard gasoline engines emit greenhouse gases such as nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbons, and carbon dioxide. All of these gases contribute to global warming. Hybrid vehicles emit 90 % less pollution than standard vehicles. Hybrid vehicles reduce the amount of fossil fuels we are consuming. They get more miles per gallon than standard vehicles. For example the Honda Civic gets 25 mpg and the Honda Civic Hybrid gets 40 mpg. Despite these facts some people are not proponents of hybrid vehicles. Critics claim that electricity isn’ t as clean as we think. They say that because electricity is produced in coal burning power plants. They also say that hybrid vehicles are not as fuel efficient as their makers claim. In my opinion hybrid vehicles are better for the environment, and I suspect the next generation to be even better.
