Introducing the new GBIF Invasive species task group

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has reconvened an invasive alien species task group. The group of twelve invasive species experts from five continents aims to support GBIF in providing authoritative data for invasive alien species, and to reinforce the value of GBIF-mediated data and information for the science-policy interface.

Building on the work done by the previous invasive species task group (2016 final report), the new task group will provide guidance and recommendations to GBIF on how biodiversity data can be better leveraged for policy and research on invasive alien species. Specifically, it will:

- examine the availability, use, and quality of invasive alien species data;

- identify key data sources for mobilisation;

- develop an invasive species use case for GBIF’s new data model; and

- provide guidance on the future of the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (GRIIS) in GBIF.

The task group will provide policy support to GBIF by delivering recommendations on how to best address the knowledge and data gaps identified in the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services’ (IPBES) Thematic Assessment of Invasive Alien Species and Their Control. Guidance on issues related to invasive alien species in international policy fora will also be provided by the task group, including national level reporting on progress towards Target 6 of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The task group will engage with the broader invasion science community, and is looking for invasive alien species data collectors, users or curators to take part in a survey. The survey will be used to inform GBIF on how the data needs of invasion scientists can be better met.
