Texture , Pattern , and Shape
Apart from color and the principles of design , texture , pattern , and shape also play important roles in interior design .
1 . Texture : Texture refers to the tactile quality of surfaces in a space . It can be rough ,
smooth , soft , or hard . The use of different textures adds depth , visual interest , and richness to a space . For example , a rough brick wall or a plush velvet sofa can create a contrasting texture .
2 . Pattern : Patterns are repeated decorative motifs or designs . They add visual
interest and create a sense of rhythm and movement in a space . Patterns can be bold and eye-catching or subtle and understated . They can be used on wallpaper , fabrics , rugs , or accessories to add personality and style to a room .
3 . Shape : Shape refers to the form or outline of an object . It can be geometric ( such
as squares , circles , or triangles ) or organic ( such as flowing curves or irregular shapes ). The use of different shapes adds visual interest and can create a sense of balance or contrast in a space . By understanding and applying the principles of color theory , design , and the significance of texture , pattern , and shape , interior designers can create visually appealing and harmonious spaces that meet the needs and preferences of their clients . These elements , when combined thoughtfully , can transform a space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment .
