BayG.A.P. SERVICE PROGRAM INTRODUCTION G.A.P. have been defined in many different ways; the one we draw on during this training is based on the following definition from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which is widely accepted and reknown throughout agri- culture and farming around the world: “Good Agricultural Practices are practices that address environmental, economic and social sustainability for on-farm processes, and result in safe and quality food…” (FAO) These practices represent a site-specific farming approach supporting the integration of the envi- ronment, society and farm economic viability over the long term. G.A.P. therefore help you to • Gear farming towards sustainable agriculture • Grow healthier products of higher quality • Facilitate food security • Generate a higher income through access to more markets • Enhance working conditions of producers, workers and families PUT SIMPLY: G.A.P. is the key for a prosperous agriculture – today and in the future 5
