“My dad and grandpa have al-
ways told me to put others first - in
basketball and life,” Colton Fraley
sated. “They always told me if I
was
selfish it wasn’t going to
pay off in the long
run. That same
advice has taught me
how to play together as a
team player, play my role, and
do the tings I need to do to help
the team - instead of me, me, me.
Like Father, Like Son
Shannon Fraley was one of the star
players on his dad’s 1986 state champion-
ship team and, to this day, credits his dad
for all the basketball knowledge he ever
learned and knows.
“There is not a day that goes by where I
don’t find myself saying the same things to
my son out on the basketball court that my
dad said to me over 30 years ago,” Shannon
Fraley laughed. “Basically, everything I know
about basketball came downstream from my
dad. Me and John have just tried to keep
that coaching tradition alive and pass
down the same wisdom we got from our
dad.”
“My dad told me and I tell my sons
the same things,” Shannon Fraley said. “Stay
true to the fundamentals. Continue to work
hard and just try to outwork the next guy.”
Losing Is Tough
Winning coaches love to win, but they have
a tough time dealing with losses. And all the
Fraleys admitted dealing with losses after-
wards was never a good family trait.
“I absolutely love sitting back and watching
my sons coach because I don’t have to do the
daily grind,” Dave Fraley stated. “I don’t have
to listen to problems on the team or problems
from people who are unhappy, and I don’t
have to go to practice unless I want to. So I
like that and then when the games are over -
win or lose - I don’t take it home with me like
when I was coaching.”
“That was serious business when we got
beat and I didn’t handle it well as a coach,”
Dave Fraley laughed. “Never did mature.”
For John Fraley losing is also tough, but his
dad has helped him trough the process after
some tough losses in the past.
“We all three have to have our own time
alone after big losses,” John Fraley laughed.
“We are all head coaches, in our minds, and
we all carry those losses like we are all head
coaches, so we have to have our time alone to
get through it and get over it.”
