SUBMITTED PHOTOS Above: Josh Thomas was part of five-person pep group that attended all the girls and boys basketball games this past winter. Pictured is, front row from left, Gideon Brainard, Camden Harris, and Thomas; back row from left, Max Brainard and Clark Lemon. One game I specifically remember is the girl’s game against Madison Southern. The girls were down by sixteen at halftime. As a fan, I realize I do not have any effect on an athlete’s physical ability, but as an athlete myself, I know fans can most certainly enhance a player’s concentration. We were committed to doing our part as fans to help. When the girls came out for the second half of the game, they were determined and motivated, and went on to win 62-57. COVID-19 PANDEMIC SPOILS MY SENIOR YEAR I’ve looked forward to being a senior and walking the stage to receive my diploma for as long as I can remember. After all, this is the year that my entire schooling was leading up to. So when we were sent home due to the COVID-19 Pandemic I was disappointed. While missing out on senior prom was regretful, I was more disappointed knowing that I would never get to play tennis for SWHS again. I had worked hard to improve my game and I had high hopes for my senior season. I will cherish the lasting friendships I’ve made on and off the court, and I’ll never forget the encouragement coaches Michael and Lauren Childers gave me. They taught me to believe in myself and my abilities. Another area close to my heart is my work with Beacon Hill Baptist Church, volunteering my time for mission projects and ministering to others in my community through service. I am also a part of SLAM (Students Leading Through Arts and Music) at my church. Our mission is to use our talents and abilities to bring glory to God. We had to cancel our summer mission trip to Vermont, due to the pandemic. While all of these cancellations are frustrating, I know by the grace of God and work of the Spirit, we will get through this. So, in this precarious time, I claim Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” 8 • In Touch with Southern Kentucky June 2020
