Why do recruiters use them ? Employer application forms are tailored to build up a profile of your skills , competencies and motivations to be effectively matched against the requirements for the job / company . These forms are typically completed on-line .
Application forms serve a number of functions for employers , including :
• Deterring applicants who are not sufficiently motivated , cutting down the number of candidates to consider .
• Standardising the format and content of applicants ’ details , making comparison quicker and fairer .
Where do I begin ? Before you put finger to keyboard , you need to be very clear about what you want to do and why . Why do you want to work for this organisation specifically ? You need to find out enough about them to show that your interest is genuine and also to assess whether the company is right for you . You also need to be realistic in assessing the skills , knowledge and experience that you can bring to this application - do you have what they are asking for and have you the evidence to show this ? This is where the self-assessment and your work diary should really benefit you .
Filling in the boxes Personal Details Ensure that the employer will know exactly where and how to contact you . Make sure all the information given is correct and up to date .
Education Make sure you have all your academic results to hand as these will often be checked at a later date and you don ’ t want to appear fraudulent .
Employment and Work Experience Space is limited , so think in terms of transferable skills and relevance to the specific application . Use reverse chronology unless directed otherwise .
Personal Interests / Achievements Focus on relevant responsibilities , skills developed and knowledge acquired .
Referees Typically employers expect one academic and one other , possibly related to employment . Make sure that you ask your referees before filling their name in and do get their title right .
