From the Forest Limitless Opportunities I t is my pleasure to introduce the fifth edition of Imported Wood – your guidebook for sourcing imported woods. In each edition, we highlight new applications and species for consideration by architects, designers, builders and other profes- sionals seeking unique and cost effective wood products. This year, we’re going “Hollywood” with a feature story on how a “plain Jane” in imported plywood was chosen as the star of stage and screen. You will also learn how a U.S. manu- facturer uses imported wood to dress up the millwork used in high-end retail stores. More design ideas for seamlessly integrating sustainable exotic woods into natural environments can be found in an article on the Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California. These, and other stories, come to you courtesy of the International Wood Products Association (IWPA) and its CURE educational outreach program. IWPA was founded more than fifty years ago by a group of leaders who shared a vision for a professional association dedicated to setting high standards and promoting sustainable trade in forest products. IWPA continues to translate that vision into tangible tools for their members to use in day to day business. IWPA keeps member companies abreast of new regulations and laws through an eNewsletter first-alert service and a newly re-designed website at www. iwpawood.org. IWPA also sponsors an annual World of Wood convention, complete with ex- pansive networking events and packed with educational sessions on the latest industry devel- opments. The next convention is scheduled March 25-27, 2009 in Indian Wells, California. IWPA performs many roles for its members – advocates responsible policy positions in the halls of Congress (and state legislatures) – establishes and promotes product standards – and educates and informs the marketplace on the advantages of using imported wood products. IWPA brings committed importers, their suppliers and customers, and the service providers that facilitate trade together for a common good – creating sustainable communities and lasting environmental benefits and trade. It is my honor to serve as IWPA’s elected president this year. The market always presents challenges, but as you will attest when reading this year’s Imported Wood, our businesses and our customers have limitless opportunities. Sincerely, Imported Wood – The Guide to Applications, Sources and Trends is a publication of the International Wood Products Association (IWPA) and its CURE (Conservation, Utilization, Reforestation, Education) program. IWPA is the leading association in North America committed to the promotion and enhancement of sustainable trade in imported hardwood and softwood products. CURE is the educational outreach program of IWPA. IWPA/CURE would like to thank the advertisers, full listing available on page 80, who provided the financial support that made this publication possible. In addition, we thank the following organizations for their support and cooperation, insight and energy, in producing and distributing this annual publication: The American Home Furnishings Alliance, Architectural Woodwork Institute, Association for Retail Environments (A.R.E.), Ghana Forestry Commission, International Tropical Timber Organization, National Marine Manufacturers Association, National Wood Flooring Association, Sarawak Timber Association and the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory.
