INTERNATIONAL TUTORS’ MAGAZINE CHECKING IN WITH THE ITs GOOD ARGUMENTS AND IMPROMPTU SPEAKING BY SAM NG Taught by Noga Zaborowski on 15 October 2018 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018 MOVIE CLUB FILM REVIEW BY HSU WUT YEE WIN The Shining is a perfect psychological thriller, not about ghosts but about madness. Although it doesn’t include many violent scenes, the acting and background music are excellent and create a slow creepiness throughout the film. In this movie, the main character Jack lives for months alone with his family in a hotel. Influenced by the haunted hotel and the extreme isolation, he goes insane and tries to kill his family. The question about Jack is how did he change like that? Is the devil outside or inside of him? There are other interesting characters, like Jack’s wife Wendy, who slowly discovers the reality of his madness, and his son Danny, who can see what is actually happening in the hotel. This movie involves a lot of uncertainty and mystery surrounding human behavior. What is certain is that it expresses the idea about the potential of evil inside every human mind. DEBATE CLUB HOT TOPIC In the workshop, we talked about how to prepare ourselves for impromptu speeches, when we do not have much time to prepare and need to present shortly after we receive the topic. At first, I believed it would be quite difficult to give such a speech. Fortunately, the International Tutor taught us several concepts and skills useful for generating a good and persuasive argument. I particularly liked learning about how to use an acronym to organize my ideas. An acronym is an abbreviation of multiple words, consisting of the first letter of each word. For example, we can use the acronym PREP (Point, Reason, Example, Point) to structure a topic and make our speech very convincing. Most importantly, the tutor gave us a lot of room for discussion and practice with these fresh ideas and skills! Overall, I enjoyed the workshop very much as I learned different skills and I believe the experience will be useful in my future study and career. 6 BY GIGI DONG WENQIAO We debated the motion, “Abortion should be legal and treated as a matter of public policy in every country.” One side pointed out why abortion should be legal. Firstly, they explored the definition of personhood to explain that abortion is not a violation of human rights since, to some extent, the embryo or fetus is not considered a person until birth. Secondly, by making abortion legal there would be a decrease in maternal health problem rates caused by unsafe abortion procedures. Lastly, women should have the right to make decisions concerning their own bodies. On the other hand, the opposing team argued that no matter how safe abortion could be, it would still offer physical and psychological harm to maternal health. Besides, the right to decide over your own body shouldn’t allow you to hurt others and end someone else’s life, even a fetus'. 7
