Chinese with American. This multicultural
bunch decided to revive Cleopatra, an
Egyptian queen. Each group battled
to collect the most promising material
available to make the most accurate and
environmentally friendly costume. Born in
30 B.C., Cleopatra came to life within the
walls of the ASLLC, bourne by the efforts
of so many people from so many different
corners of the world, all different from my
own, and all different from the celebrity we
were recreating. Fourteen different minds
created the same piece of art through scrap
fabric and paper. This gave new meaning
to “reincarnation”. Dia de los Muertos
gives more meaning to death of our loved
ones, but also to the life of things and
objects. Soon, the model to be our queen
was dressed in long “dead” articles of
clothing, looking all the more alive for it.
Additionally throughout the Language
Centre, there was the Chinese Monk
Tang Seng, two Michael Jacksons, Marilyn
Monroe, two Heath Ledgers (dressed as The
Joker from Batman) and Charlie Chaplin.
karaoke, snacks and a whole lot of dancing.
Old songs were also “brought back from
the dead” as students bopped to One
Direction and Flo Rida in unison. Snacks
were distributed and the party was eminent
as people refreshed themselves from the
stress of the competition. The leisure
time was short lived, however, for soon
the groups were asked to assemble once
again for the Award Ceremony. There
was much hullabaloo as
the winning groups were
announced on the basis
of Best Teamwork, Most
Accurate, Best Catwalk,
Most Sustainable and
finally, the Grand Prize!
Each group won a large pumpkin bucket
filled with candy to share amongst their team,
and the group who won the Grand Prize also
received individual prizes - reusable metal
straws, to lessen the use of harmful plastic.
This accentuated the idea of sustainability
which was present the whole night.
Regardless of who took home the titles,
everyone went home smiling, with a
lot of candy and a whole lot of new
friends, celebrating the true spirit (haha)
of Halloween! As the clock struck nine
and from the darkened sky outside there
came a ringing of upcoming deadlines, as
costumes were half-removed and fun was
remembered, as the last
cell phone numbers were
exchanged and the last
goodbyes were said, as
the lights turned on and
the last camera shuttered,
the International Tutor’s
Halloween Night became a memory which
would often be resurrected due to the
fondness with which I will consider it. The
International Tutors taught me the power of
forcing yourself to learn from others, and to
grow from it. I will never forget this night. v

The models showed off their costumes
in a catwalk. The catwalk was a jubilee of
blacklight and fanfare, each reincarnated
celebrity strutting their stuff to the song of
their choosing. The International Tutors,
acting as Masters of Ceremony, announced
the details of each model’s apparel. Groups
were to guess who each celebrity was for a
grand prize at the end. Again, I saw people
coming together to work towards one
goal. Each word of English was heard and
circulated, the words written down carefully.
The catwalk concluded to much protest,
