PA N C A K E H E AV E N ALAN COXON Question: What do Pancakes, and Carnivals have in common? Answer: Everything! these two elements have been combined For centuriesaround the streets! of the world with most of and celebrated many parts the action taking place in Historically across Britain, “pancake races” were once held in villages and towns. The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney, Buckinghamshire, was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time, until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house and raced to church forgetting she was still carrying her frying pan and pancake. Today in some locations across the UK people still run through the streets tossing pancakes into the air and catching them in the pan whilst running. All this brings back memories, as I once had the pleasure of being invited to compete in a pancake race against a few Clergy and the Bishop for a charity event at Worcestershire Cathedral. Alas much scull duggery and macho competitiveness saw me being bought down onto the flagstone flooring of the Cathedral with only a pancake toss away from the winning post. www.internationallifestylemagazine.com
