You Need Not Words,
Only Heart
by T. Jenese Thompson
Do you speak Tango?
You know,
the language of immigrants
From the streets of Argentina where Africans,
Spaniards and Italians,
Eastern Europeans and Englishmen
elevated their poor existence by blending
their cultures so that the beat,
passion, Bohemia, and order combined
to form one of the world’s most celebrated languages
In this inclusive transnational language of Tango,
whoever you are, you need not words,
only heart - be it Chicago or Berlin
Speaking Tango means lifting your head
and chest high towards an other, in confidence
that each is moving with each positively
in the purest intentions to soar
together in elegance
