ing on for instance are non-traditional diplomacy . We are working on building linkages between oil companies in India and U . S . universities . Our Prime Minister has a couple of campaigns . He calls them Make in India , Digital India , Skill India . In something like Skill India for instance , we are working on upgrading India ’ s workforce training in association with industry and academic institutions in this area not as a business proposition , but rather we are looking at it as an area that will generate considerable revenues for both countries . We are looking at health care in the same way . We look at Houston as a center not just of the energy industry , but as that of knowledge industries .
Katia : What are some big picture challenges facing India today ?
The Honorable Anupam Ray : Our foremost challenge is obviously poverty . It is to keep up the rate of

economic progress that will make poverty a memory in the lifetime of the people who are around today . There are certain other challenges . We are a good nation and believe in doing the right things . We want to be a responsible member of the international community . We want to do the right things for our own and for all other citizens . We want India to be an open , tolerant , inclusive country . It is difficult in a country like India to do that . We want to be a model of a successful Democracy which respects all of its citizens and gives them equal opportunities and equal protection before the law . This is what we are working towards .
Katia : Tell us about your perspective on ways that U . S . -India cooperation may be furthered .
The Honorable Anupam Ray : India is the fastest growing economy in the world and the United States is the largest economy in the world , the United States is the oldest Democracy in the world and we are the largest Democracy in the world . India and China are the two Asian giants . President Obama said that the defining relationship of the 21st century will be the US-India relationship . We are looking at a model of a relationship that is unique and unparalleled in diplomatic history . Anything is possible in this relationship . There is an economic relationship that ’ s growing . We are two Democracies that are talking to each other about taking Democracy and human rights forward . We are both open societies that foster innovation .
We are both societies that believe in the right of every citizen to be what they can be . We believe that this will be a unique relationship in every respect .
