Swiss registrations Jan - May 2019 30,000 2018 2019 -1.61% 20,000 TOTAL PTW The latest data released by ANCMA, the motorcycle industry trade association in Italy, shows the Italian motorcycle and scooter market continuing to grow, though as elsewhere, sales dipped in May. New motorcycle registrations are down -4.99% in May (12,588 units), having been +24.67% (12,511 units) and +14.68% (12,656 units) in March and April respectively. For the YTD new motorcycle registrations were up +9.80% at 52,202 units - the strongest first five months Italy has seen since before 2014. In total PTW terms the Italian market is reported as having been +27.26 percent in March (25,119 total units) and +8.84 percent in April (in terms of selling days; 26,911 total units), but down -10.62% in May at 28,579 units, meaning that PTW registrations for the YTD for the first five months of 2019 were +7.34% at 110,385 units 13,506 +0.76% 13,404 10,000 In total PTW terms the Swiss market was running at -1.61% YTD at 21,212 units. In motorcycle market share terms Yamaha continues as market leader so far this year, with 13,506 units sold, followed by BMW, Honda, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson. +11.61% Switzerland: motorcycle registrations +0.76% YTD The latest new registration data released by Swiss industry association MotoSuisse shows total new motorcycle registrations essentially flat for the five months to May 2019 at +0.76% (13,506 units), having been down by -18.46% in May at 3,445 units. 2019 +14.64% (1,273), Z650 (1,165), and the Honda 'Africa Twin' down to fifth place from second (964 units), with the KTM 790 Duke in sixth place (892 units YTD). With seven models among the top 30 best sellers, it is no surprise that BMW has stretched its German market dominance still further, having sold 12,939 units in total YTD for a commanding 25.85 percent market share (up by +22.22 percent compared to the first two months of 2018). Kawasaski was second with 5,847 units sold for a 11.68 percent market share; KTM was third (5,685 units sold, 11.36 percent share); Honda fourth with 5,509 units sold YTD for a 11.01 percent market share, Yamaha fifth (4,260 sold, 9.23 percent share) and Harley-Davidson sixth (4,162 units, 8.31 percent share). Total motorcycle registrations for the full year 2018 in Germany were said to be +7.35 percent (108,296 units), with total PTW registrations +10.98 The latest data from the IVM, the motorcycle industry trade association in Germany, shows motorcycle registrations down by -2.76 percent in April (16,788 units), having been +8.35 percent in March (20,394 units). Although April was a shorter month in selling day terms compared to 2018, it was still the third best April seen there since before 2009. For the year to date the German motorcycle market was +11.61 percent (50,059 units in total) - the best German motorcycle market performance since before 2009. In total PTW terms, April was +1.45 percent (23,728 units), having been +13.18 percent in March (44,227 units), making the YTD +14.64 percent at 67,995 new PTW units registered in total. The top selling model YTD remains the BMW R 1250 GS (5,113 units), way ahead of the Yamaha MT-07, which is now in second place (1,284 units), followed by the Kawasaki Z900 MOTORCYCLE - the strongest Italian market performance since 2012. Scooter registrations were +5.22% for the first five months of 2019 at 58,183 units registered, with three of the top four best sellers being Honda's Italian made SH 150/300/125 range, selling 12,096 units between them YTD, with Piaggio’s Beverly 300 ABS in third spot (4,035 units) and the Liberty 124 ABS fifth (2,465 units), just ahead of Yamaha's XMAX 300 with 2,399 new units registered so far in 2019. Honda's X-ADV 750 was next (2,177 units). The top selling motorcycle in Italy YTD was the BMW R 1250 GS (2,465 units YTD), followed by Honda’s ‘Africa Twin’ (1,834 units), the Yamaha ‘Tracer’ 900 (1,664 units), the Benelli TRK 502/X (1,609 units), the R 1250 GS Adventure (1,426 units) and the Honda NC 750 X (1,122 units). www.idnmag.com
