Supersprox- exit from Ukraine

In 2023 and 2024 we carried regular reports from our friend in Ukraine – DJ Maughfling of Supersprox fame. Originally founded by his father in Wales, Supersprox was already a ' storied ' brand by the time the war with Russia broke out the company already has some six decades of history in its locker. IDN recently caught up with DJ Maughfling again. As Supersprox CEO we talked generally about the situation in Ukraine, and, especially, his plans for the factory in Zhytomyr( West of the capital Kiev) that the company had stayed in until this year …

The people in Ukraine have generally adapted to the situation- as much as it is possible to adapt to war. We have seen the combat strategies used by both sides changing the dynamic in the country. Even compared to the situation last year, the current combat strategies are making it ever more difficult to operate a regular business. " We remember that when the war started, it was a traditional-style conflict with two sides meeting at a front line using equipment and tactics that they understood from historical conflicts. " That didn ' t work out well for anybody. The front line got stuck, with more and more casualties and no progress for either side. We have seen each side try new tactics and quickly adopt and further develop the most successful. " In 2023-4, missiles were targeting infrastructure- such as oil depots and large power generation and

distribution locations. The situation wasn ' t really moving; the front line was stuck. With relatively unsuccessful tactics, there was no pressure to negotiate. Currently( starting in early 2026) the use of high speed, long-distance drones, by both sides, has been the most impactful and disturbing tactical development. Russia started with the Iranian-designed Shahed drone- built in Russia and called the Geran-2. It used a propeller and flew at about 180 km / h. But that quickly became ' old news ' and this year we see more and more jet-powered drones. " Mainly the Geran-3 and some newer Geran- 4 / 4, 500 km / h capable versions. This technology is developing very fast. In August 2026, Russia launched around 2,800 jetpowered drones, compared to only 350 in June. This is how fast things change in this war. " These new drones are not being aimed at front line targets. They are not targeting large infrastructure, like oil terminals. They are more focused on targets that will disturb people like us- civilians, regular people, businesses. The orthodox view is that the objective
is to lower moral. This year has started with heavy bombardments, mainly on Kiev and cities in the east. But gradually developing into what we see now- the of bombing civilian infrastructure. " This is happening in all the major cities in Ukraine- the range of the newest generation of drone rockets allow that. " It goes something like this: every day, multiple targets are attacked. Nowadays those targets are distribution warehouses, individual fuel filling stations on the highway, post offices, and factories. We don ' t know how targets are chosen, but the connection is anything that impacts the largest possible number of civilians. " Often, when a target is hit with a drone, a second wave of drones hits the same target a few hours later. This strategy is quite impactful because the first hit may not do much damage but often starts a fire. That fire could be extinguished, except there ' s a second wave of drones coming later, and the firefighters don ' t know
if they will be attacked or not. They ' re forced to evacuate the burning building until the air raid alarms are over, during which time the fire has had a chance to take hold. " We have seen this in our own city,
' high speed, long-distance drones '
with a number of large factories being hit, including those of some of our friends. " As far as I can see, this seems to be the ' strategy of choice ' for the foreseeable future because the chance of Russia winning on the front line seems very slim. Therefore, they have adopted a tactic to attack

infrastructure inside the country with the aim of demoralising the population and disturbing the economy. " This tactic is now being used by both sides, and Ukraine is doing what is can to launch drone attacks in Russia. I have always slightly regretted, not being skilled enough to build a larger and more successful company. But recently I have realised the advantages of being small.
