In the future, I would like to use this method in my class because I believe that with this method, education adapts to students, not the other way around. Even if I think that it is a great method, in my opinion, each class is different, so teachers have to analyze their classroom, in order to detect students’ needs. Once you know what students need, then you can search for the best method for them.
Moreover, I think that is a great idea that students can use different kind of materials and the fact that teachers give that much freedom to pupils. I think that this method has great ideas that every teacher can apply in his/her classroom.
All Dalton’s schools have these pillars, but in this school, De Bongerd, teachers have added two more:
- Reflection: students have the chance to plan, organize, direct, reflect and take initiative. Therefore, students become aware of their abilities (before, during and after completing the task).
- Freedom: teachers give students freedom so they can plan and organize themselves. Students are earning their freedom, so they are aware that freedom comes with responsibility.
MY OPINION
In my opinion, one element makes this method special. In all the classrooms, there is a task board, where students can plan and decide what task they want to do in one week and how they want to distribute their work. It is a great way to work on many 21st century skills and is something that all schools across Europe can use.
