XII.2 Karate – basic principles Karate is characterized mainly by the use of punches, blockades, kicks and open hand strokes, where different techniques are given several names, depending on the area of the body to defend or attack. Karate also includes: several sweeps and some throws , some joint dislocations; as well as blows to vulnerable points, and to nervous points. In karate strokes, strength, speed, breathing, balance, tension and relaxation are used by applying a correct hip twist and a very precise connection of muscles and joints. Unlike other disciplines, it seeks to defeat the adversary by one or more striking impacts, precise and definitive, seeking to be as effective as possible. It also has a self-defense character. 177
