RULES OF USAGE
Titles
Our style regarding professional titles is different from AP style . We have chosen this approach to simplify guidelines for writers .
• In body copy , we capitalize organization titles ( Medical Director , President , Chair ) but lowercase general professional titles ( doctor , nurse , professor , nurse practitioner , radiologist ).
• Often , articles or other pieces of content include callouts separate from the body copy that list providers and their titles . In these callouts , capitalize all titles . This includes titles that would be lowercased in body copy , such as nurse practitioner and medical dog handler .
• Titles that include “ in chief ” should be written as : Surgeon in Chief or Mental Health in Chief without hyphens .
Examples : In body copy :
• Jena Hausmann serves as Children ’ s Hospital Colorado ’ s President and Chief Executive Officer and works alongside many others , including Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive , Jane Doe , RN . They work closely with John Doe , MD , Surgeon in Chief .
• Jane Doe , RN , serves as a nurse in Children ’ s Colorado ’ s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders . She works together with John Doe , MD , an oncologist / hematologist , to offer kids incredibly different care .
In callouts : John Doe , MD Pediatric Gastroenterologist , Children ’ s Hospital Colorado Assistant Professor , Gastroenterology , University of Colorado School of Medicine
