The USDA defines food insecurity as “the state of
being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity
of affordable, nutritious food.”
Alaska is Food Insecure
Here in Alaska, we import 96 percent of our
food from Outside. If transportation systems
fail, we have no way to access the food
coming in.
This deficiency of locally produced food
makes Alaska one of the most food insecure
states in the nation. By educating ourselves on
where to buy locally sourced food and commit
to purchasing from those entities, we make
our agriculture stronger, which makes our
economy and community stronger.
