EXPLAIN THE CONCEPTS OF SCHOOL WASH AND SCHOOL GARDEN; HOW DO THEY TIE BACK TO THE PALS APPROACH?

This work is part of a wider project being run by SNV with support from UNICEF and the Dutch government. It is a community empowerment programme with particular focus on water, sanitation and agriculture with schools as focal point in the community.

We are seeking to identify evidence that the CSOs have developed new capacities and can conduct evidence-based approaches. We have planned timely trips to visit the LCBs and monitor their progress in implementing the skills they acquired from the workshop on policy, advocacy and lobbying

School Gardens have been developed under the CEP as promotion centres for good agricultural practices in the wider community and as a means of building parental participation.

School Wash: SNV is working in community levels to improve safe water provision and hygiene practices in Schools. Recent research from Kenya revealed that poor sanitation in schools contributes to girl-child drop-out especially at the puberty stage which is one of the issues addressed in school WASH.

We would also like to see increased awareness of policies that facilitate adoption of good WASH and agriculture approaches and appropriate technologies in the targeted districts. We have set up an interactive online platform accessible to the LCBs where a number of policy documents and relevant reports have been uploaded and discussions on key issues and learning is being promoted

● Putting together the training program and tool kit for the workshop

● The visits made across the regions and to the different NGOs and watching the LCBs start working on their PALS report..

EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS BY JUNE 2013(TIME PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO END)

Our goal is that by the time the PALS approach under CEP rounds up in June 2014, the different LCBs involved will have acquired skills and knowledge in policy, advocacy and lobbying that will be sustained beyond 2014.
