Accounting and Numbers

Some people say that accounting and numbers are the same. To some extent they probably are, however, there are large differences between the two. When I started this internship, I thought Accounting and Numbers where the same. Imagine my reaction when I found out they were not. Numbers can be abstract, with no particular definition or purpose to them. Everyone remembers the math classes the schools made you take from nursery school. As you get older, Numbers tend to mean more than just 1+1=2. They mean money, they mean salaries, they mean fuel in liters, and they mean height, weight, grades, tax identification, bank account balances. In other words, Numbers add up to your life. In primary school, teachers complicate Numbers by adding letters like ‘x’ or ‘y’, asking you to find them like they are not on the page staring at you - you probably did not appreciate that math lesson. However these letters helped you learn problem solving in an abstract and safe sense. Problem solving in accounting is much harder because you do not have any letters to help you; all you see is a number on a page. So accounting and Numbers are similar, the only difference is the context. Now to throw a question back at you, what do the numbers you see everyday mean to you?
