‘You’ll have to teach me your whole scripture while standing
on one foot,’ answered the man.
‘Have you lost it?’ someone cried from the crowd.
‘This man is insane,’ shouted another.
‘He’s here to insult our Father. Throw him out!’ said another
voice.
However, the priest waived his hand to them, which silenced
everybody. ‘Is that all you want in order to believe in Him and
worship Him?’ asked the priest.
‘Ah… yes,’ he answered.
‘Alright, my son,’ said the priest and he stood up on
one foot. ‘Do not treat others as you wouldn’t like to
be treated yourself.’ Then, he put his foot down, sat back on his chair, and added,
‘That is the whole scripture . The rest is commentary.’
The crowd started cheering for the priest. The man couldn’t believe what had
just happened. The answer was still sinking in. He was trying to come up with a
counter argument, trying desperately to find a flaw in the priest’s answer, but
was unable to.
Eventually, he began to see the shallowness of his belief. He realized, he was not
searching for the truth but being arrogant. At last, he saw the light. He thanked
the priest, kissed his hands, and returned to his town as a firm believer in God.
