Teacher : Why are people always
tired on Earth Day?
Student : Because they just
finished a March.
Every saturday evening, a bunch of friends and I, meet at The Orange Copper
restaurant to listen to true, interesting incidents. Last time, Mohit narrated how
his colony members were able to catch a thief who had been stealing in that area
for three months. Prior to that, Vikram had recounted how a woman came to his
father’s pawn shop and sold a diary bearing Dilip Kumar’s signature and an
Urdu couplet written in his handwriting.
Today was my turn. Coincidentally, it was my birthday too. My friends sat all
around the table eating slices of the black forest cake I had just cut as I began to
talk.
‘Although our ancestors left a lot for us, a silver wrist
watch was the most peculiar one. Several generations
back, we used to be quite poor, and someone in the
family decided to start a clothing business, which as
you all know, we still own.
This watch was bought from the first profits of that business
and it was supposed to signify all the honest hard work which
brought us out of poverty.
