// EDITOR ’ S QUESTION ?

SURYA VARANASI , CTO , STORCENTRIC

O ur SME customers consistently rank compliance with global data protection regulations as one of their top challenges . This is due in large part to the fact that there is already a tangle of domestic and international data protection laws , with new laws constantly emerging and current laws being perpetually updated . Unfortunately , this already challenging situation is likely to become even more so in both the short and long-term as the world continues to suffer and react to the rising tsunami of cybercrime that has come about because of the pandemic .

With the legal , financial and consumer trust consequences of non-compliance being far too dire to risk , many enterprise organisations have smartly invested in compliance and / or data protection officers whose sole responsibility is to ensure their organisation obeys all internal governance , as well as external regulatory and legal requirements .

THIS ALREADY
CHALLENGING SITUATION IS LIKELY TO BECOME EVEN MORE SO IN BOTH THE SHORT AND LONG-TERM AS THE WORLD CONTINUES TO SUFFER AND REACT TO THE RISING TSUNAMI OF CYBERCRIME THAT HAS COME ABOUT BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC .
Of course , the question at hand is how can an SME , that has neither the manpower nor the budget of its enterprise counterparts , ever hope to keep its head above water ?
My first piece of advice for any SME is to partner with a Systems Integrator ( SI ), Value Added Reseller ( VAR ) and / or other industry consultant who possesses a core competency in how to ensure data protection , without sacrificing capability , performance or future expansion . The trusted channel partner should be expert in a vast range of strategies and technologies and be able to guide the SMEs in making the best choices for their unique IT , business and budgetary requirements . Then , once the investment is made , how to seamlessly integrate the assets into their business processes .
The trusted channel advisor will most assuredly counsel that one of the most critical data protection investments an SME can make is in an unbreakable backup solution . While it is necessary to protect against as well as detect the inevitable successful ransomware infiltration , SMEs must be able to ensure they can recover . The ideal solution should include features like file fingerprinting , file redundancy , file serialisation , secure timestamp and auto file repair , as well as the necessary capabilities to ensure regulatory compliance .
While an unbreakable backup is ideal to protect against ransomware and external threats , it ’ s equally valuable for data defence internally . An unbreakable backup is just as it sounds – the data is ‘ locked down ,’ so to speak , so the backup can ’ t be damaged or tampered with , and the company need not worry about data loss or downtime should an insider threat be lurking .

WHILE IT IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT AGAINST AS WELL AS DETECT THE INEVITABLE SUCCESSFUL RANSOMWARE INFILTRATION , SMES MUST BE ABLE TO ENSURE THEY CAN RECOVER .
