EDITOR ’ S QUESTION

If society is to have a chance at tackling climate change , we have to be aware of the impact our actions have on the environment – but to be aware , it ’ s important that we can see how decisions affect impact at the individual

I BELIEVE THE KEY IS PROVIDING PRICE TRANSPARENCY FOR EACH OPTION SO HOMEBUILDERS CAN STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN WHAT HAS THE LEAST IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT WITH WHAT IS ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE WITHIN THEIR BUDGET .
and collective levels . I believe this has been one of our most difficult issues in shifting behaviour to date .
We must stop seeing biodiversity as a victim to be saved and see it for what it really is – our most valuable resource – which , irrespective of where you sit on the science spectrum , is entirely within our capability and capacity to significantly and materially change .
It ’ s a guiding principle in our organisation , where we use cloud-based virtual pre-construction tools to ‘ partner ’ with biodiversity and can already leave more than 93 % of carbon in the ground .
One of the core features of our utecture platform is that it will allow home builders and consumers to see the carbon footprint , the cost and check compliance of each of their choices , as well as the on-going thermal comfort and operating cost of those choices throughout the life of the home .
By making consumers aware of the impact of their actions , they ’ re empowered to make the right decision for the planet . I believe the key is providing price transparency for each option so homebuilders can strike a balance between what has the least impact on the environment with what is economically feasible within their budget .
Give people visibility and power , and they ’ ll make the right choice .
To further build on our environmental capabilities , we ’ ve recently collaborated with the Green Building Council of Australia , Monash University , the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland to simulate operational energy performance and embodied carbon costs in our platform ’ s modelling .
Refining these capabilities is our team ’ s focus every day , and the place , science , technology and doing the most good for our shared planet all comes together .
We have deployed algorithms to , for example , reduce the amount of steel in buildings by up to 40 %.
