In early September 2017 , Equifax Ltd ’ s US parent company announced it had been the victim of a criminal cyberattack . Although UK systems were not breached , the attack compromised the personal information of some UK consumers .
Equifax said a file containing 15.2m UK records dating from between 2011 and 2016 was attacked in the incident . The file contained duplicates and data for testing purposes alongside some information about actual consumers . Equifax says it has used all available resources to identify the actual consumers impacted .

Yahoo ! was fined US $ 35 million in April this year because the data of 500 million users had been compromised in 2014 . The company had to pay , not for the leakage , but for concealing the incident , and leaving investors and auditors unaware of the situation . The data included emails , passwords , dates of birth and phone numbers .
