FS Group and TIM : 4G coverage on the Milan – Bologna high-speed line completed

The FS Italiane Group and TIM have activated the first mobile radio coverage system with 4G technology in the tunnels of the Milan – Bologna high-speed line , achieving complete coverage of the route .

4G technology provides passengers with a stable , high-quality connection even in the most unfavourable areas – such as railway tunnels – through both the onboard Wi-Fi service and direct coverage . This is all provided by the TLC Operators participating in the project : TIM ; iliad ; Vodafone ; and WINDTRE .
Upgrades to 4G technology will also be launched in the coming months on the high-speed lines between Bologna and Florence and will continue during 2023 from Turin to Milan , Florence to Naples and Bologna to Venice . The aim is to achieve increasingly reliable voice and data connectivity on high-speed lines and on conventional lines , starting with the busiest routes , in order to guarantee a high-quality service to passengers on high-speed , Intercity and regional trains and to railway companies in the freight sector .
The activation of the systems on the Milan – Bologna high-speed line represents the first step in the agreement signed between the FS Italiane Group , through the infrastructure manager RFI and TIM in
December 2021 . Moreover , as part of initiatives linked to the NRRP , feasibility studies on the possible use of 5G technologies will be carried out .
