tracks at the edge, rather than allowing
access to the data centre.
Honeytrap files (or, files that are particularly
attractive to ransomware programmes) are
scattered around the estate to hopefully lure
a ransomware programme to break cover
before being able to attack any real, valuable
files. If a ransomware attack does get
through, then having a backup solution with
an immutable database is absolutely key,
as well as a thoroughly written and tested
recovery plan that covers all of the business’
recovery, not just restoring data.
Some businesses, especially in the finance
industry, are now looking to create airgapped
data vaults to further protect against
ransomware. Solutions where data can only
pass one way, in a prescribed route at a
prescribed time, mean that recovery is then
made into a clean-room test environment
before being released to the organisation.
We live in an age of ‘Schrödinger’s Data’
where we want to simultaneously have

greater access and use of data while
making it more secure, compliant and
less accessible. There are tools out there
to make this achievable where they can
have a dual role of driving cost out of
the infrastructure and service, as detailed
above, while lifting the value of the data
and providing solid regulatory compliance.
If a business does not have the budget to
achieve infrastructure modernisation and
meet compliance regulations, then perhaps
combining the two projects under a single
programme will drive the results in both
camps from a much reduced expenditure.
A final word
There is a lot for the IT leader to think
about as we begin to emerge from this
crisis, but at the same time, there is some
real opportunity to drive a faster Digital
Transformation agenda that helps remove
the legacy cost and complexity, drive
innovation and efficiency, and prepare IT
to step up and lead the lines of business
into the new world. We have no idea what
the next three, six, 12 months will look like
for society or organisations, nationally and
globally, so agility and flexibility will be key
to success. •
