/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// FINAL WORD How to derive value from ‘pay as you go’ cloud Businesses are struggling to cope with more data than ever before and enterprises are therefore utilising efficient, scalable solutions. Cloud data platforms are enabling businesses to handle data more efficiently and scale to their specific needs. Rob Mellor, Vice President and General Manager, EMEA at WhereScape, an international data warehouse automation and Big Data software company, tells us more. I f you’ve ever had the joy of watching 8-year-olds play football, you’ll have witnessed a particular parent on the sidelines; not content with simple encouragement, they bellow instructions to their child to do things that, frankly, the world’s greatest players might struggle with! Their understanding of the gap between where their child’s skills currently lies and where they want them to be is wildly misaligned. To continue with this analogy, it’s a phenomenon I see when talking to organisations about a move to the cloud. So enamoured are they with the potential the cloud offers, they are blind to the reality of where their current infrastructure really is. Their desire to ‘get to the cloud’ immediately is understandable, but in most cases – like the parent who wants their child to play like Ronaldo – wholly unrealistic. www.intelligentcio.com INTELLIGENTCIO 103
