This month’s cover story comes from our ‘Industry Watch’, which is focused on telecoms, and looks at the ways in which Vodafone Egypt is utilising Ericsson’s cloud-based platform to enable their journey towards virtualisation and cloud transformation. As part of the telecoms industry feature we look at the development of 5G in Africa, exploring the potential benefits of deployment as well as the current limitations. One of the greatest gains from 5G will be the acceleration of IoT, the possibilities of which are transformational for any region. In this issue’s ‘Tech Talk’ section, Kelly Preston, Data Analytics Manager at SilverBridge, discusses in particular the transformation IoT will have in the area of data analytics, along with AI. Recently released Mozilla-backed research revealed that significant barriers to Internet access remain in Africa. Focusing on Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa, the research looked at the differences in the use of and www.intelligentcio.com perception of Internet between male and female users, those from urban and rural locations and new and non-Internet users. We further explore Internet use in Nigeria in this month’s ‘Country Focus’, which despite being the most connected African country, is estimated to only be putting to use 10–15% of the nation’s incoming submarine cable capacity.
