EDITOR’S NOTE
TO GROW IN THE
CONNECTIVITY BUSINESS,
KEEP CYBER CRIME
OFFLINE.
Welcome to Issue 5 of
Intelligent CIO Africa
Cybersecurity has been the hot topic recently
following the global ransomware cyberattack,
WannaCry. The virus created chaos worldwide
and affected a huge array of organisations,
including universities, airlines, national health
services and even governments.
Whilst cybercrime is always a prominent
discussion in an exponentially growing digital
world, this latest attack has forced individuals,
organisations and even countries to assess their
weak areas. A month on from the cyberattack,
Digital Shadows’ analyst team offer a detailed
review of the competing theories around the
how, who and why of the attack.
Telecom operators today operate some of the biggest
mission-critical networks with large volumes of sensitive
information. In an age of ‘connected and faster’
everything, the safety net of cyber security is vital to
success. With cybercrime on the mind, this issue’s
country focus takes us to Kenya. The creation
of a new Computer and Cybercrime Bill has
highlighted the evident need for greater
guidelines and regulations in a country that has become increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks in the last two years.
We speak to security experts about the types of cyberattacks most prominent in Kenya and the preventative measures
enterprises can take to take to protect themselves.
At DarkMatter, the brightest minds from across the globe
work on securing your operations 24/7. Empowering you
with a full suite of next-generation cyber security services
and capabilities, we help you grow with confidence. Data protection and backup is another topic explored in this issue with a feature focused on disaster recovery. With the
daunting statistic that at least one major disaster occurs every single day, the consequences of not having a disaster
recovery strategy in place are monumental for businesses. This has only been heightened by the concept of the
always-on enterprise.
Get Guarded by Genius: [email protected] Many organisations are now turning to cloud-based disaster recovery solutions, which make disaster recovery affordable
for businesses of all sizes. Veeam is recognising this, evident in their growing partnerships with service provides such as
Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. We speak to Veeam about the regional drivers and inhibitors in the disaster
recovery landscape and what their end-to-end solutions can offer.
Issue 5 has a focus on ‘smart’ technology, including a feature on IoT transformation in Africa. A global IoT survey found
that businesses report significant increases in efficiency, innovation and visibility with the implementation of IoT. The
greatest impact of this is seen on the industrial sector and we further explore this in an industry focus on how the Fourth
Industrial Revolution is disrupting the African manufacturing industry.
As well as exploring the ways in which Africa is embracing this technology, we speak to industry leaders from Veeam and
Metacom for our Editor’s Question about the challenges Africa faces when implementing IoT.
To round off this issue we ‘Get to Know’ General Manager at Cisco, Nigeria, Olakunle Oloruntimehin. He shares his ideas
about the importance of trust and the three attributes he considers vital for any leader.
I hope you enjoy the magazine. As ever, if you would like to contribute to any future magazines please do not hesitate to
