EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to issue four of Intelligent CIO Africa, my first edition as Editor... Today’s digital landscape is constantly evolving and in issue four we have captured the widespread impact this is having on African enterprises, across a variety of industries. The increasing implementation of digital solutions for businesses are going beyond providing ease and convenience to supplying crucial and even life-saving resources. For this month’s cover story, we explore the transformative effect that digital solutions are having on the healthcare industry with a case study of Nigerian based company, eHealth Africa. For this month’s Editor’s Question we are focusing on the evolution of e-payments. With the development of QR payments, introduction of prepaid payment solutions and increasing international mobile remittances, digital payments are fast becoming the norm in Africa and the continent’s aim for a cashless economy is building momentum. We ask industry leaders how digital payments are impacting African enterprises and what steps businesses need to take to prepare for this new landscape. The uptake of these innovative solutions has the potential to transform the continent and Cisco Africa’s Vice President, David Meads, believes that South Africa is ripe with digital opportunity. In a feature looking at the impact digitisation will have on the country’s economy, employment and productivity, Meads claims the fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential to ‘springboard Africa forward like never before’. With productivity in mind, SANS provide valuable insight about the importance of training in the digital era and the benefits your business can reap from investing. With digital advancements coming thick and fast, technically sound staff are a crucial part of creating an efficient organisation today. Modern technology developments are not only enhancing your business processes but also changing the environment in which you operate your business. Silex’s latest solution for making ‘dumb’ devices ‘smart’ suggests a demise of network cables in the office whilst CommScope draw a striking comparison between in-building wireless and in-building water supply to emphasise the importance of bringing cellular signals indoors for African enterprises. Red Hat are making leaps and bounds towards transforming business environments with their release of the latest version of Ansible; the leading IT automation platform. Following announcements made at Red Hat’s 2017 Summit, we look at Red Hat’s vision for making the automated enterprise a reality. We round off this issue by catching up with Cisco’s General Manager for Egypt and Libya, Ayman Elgohary. He shares with us how he began a career in technology, the frequent challenges he overcomes and the work Cisco does that gives him a sense of pride. I hope you enjoy the read.
