PROJECT UPDATE EGYPT A project is underway for a factory to assemble mobile phones in Borg Al Arab, Alexandria Governorate, Egypt. The factory is expected to be built with an initial production capacity of 1.8 million cell phones annually with sales volume estimated at US$36 million in its first year. The project will be the second mobile assembly and manufacturing plant in the Egyptian market. The percentage of local components in the phone by IKU would be around 40% and is likely to include the manufacturing of cables, chargers and headsets in partnership with companies working in the region. Some of the production will be directed to the African and Arab markets. GHANA The Ministry of Communications is focused on utilising Information Communication Technology (ICT) to improve the efficiency of service delivery in Ghana, with attention on rural and undeserved communities. As part of measures to further regulate the operations of the National Communication Authority (NCA), Ursula Owusu Ekuful said an industry Computer Emergency Response Terms (CERT) has been established for the telecommunications ecosystem in view of the increased use of networks for the provision of services to ensure the security and safety of networks.
