AP Computer Science Principles – Sophie Riojas

Computer Science Principles is a gateway to a world of unknown knowledge. It brings intricate thoughts and new ideas to new minds. My time so far in Computer Science principles has been interesting. I’ve learned many things about the digital world we use every day. I think the most interesting so far was learning about hexadecimals and how it correlated to colors. We incorporated this to a fun activity of making an emoticon. The process was time consuming, but worth it because in the end you created your very own thing using only hexadecimals. This also follows suit when we compressed text using symbols. I’ve learned many things in this class, and I’m still learning. I really appreciate the class, it has given me a new insight into how the technology we use every day works.

This is the icon she made using the hexadecimal and pixels.

"Our STEM students are digitizing the sketches of Element Superheroes/Villains. The periodic properties are the inspiration for the superpowers. After researching how engineers use the elements and periodic table, learners wrote or drew a scenario in which their superhero/villain used their superpowers to either help solve or create a problem."

In the Principles class, we have been studying big data – in other words, large data sets. Students are learning about tools that they can use to tell a story using their data. I found this chart made by Annie Crowley to be interesting. It compares the average rating by men and women of several Disney© movies.
