STAR: A CELEBRITY
WHAT IS A
A famous or exceptionally talented
performer.
A person who is preeminent in a
particular field.
A person of brilliant reputation or
talents.
According to the Oxford English
Dictionary, the first reference to a
“star” of the stage came in 1751, with
the poem, Bays in Council, professing,
“You may Shine the brightest Theatric
Star, that ever enliven’d or charm’d an
Audience.”
But why do we refer to celebrities as
“stars”?
Certainly, at their heights of fame,
celebrities inspire us with their talent,
mesmerizing us with music, dramatic
performance and sporting skill.
Bathed in the limelight, they seem to
sparkle and shine larger than life.
