Since the earliest days of European occupancy in Canada, the flags of the European homelands have been flown. Those of British North America, flown in colonial Canada, demonstrated connections to the British Empire. Both before and after Confederation in 1867, Canada displayed the United Kingdom’s Royal Union Flag (aka, the Union Jack) as its official flag.
