In 1868, Canada began unofficially flying the Red Ensign, a combination of the Union Jack and the shield of Canada. By 1892, the Red Ensign became the official naval flag and Canadian merchant vessels were authorized to fly it at sea. It remained, however, the unofficial standard flown on land.
