The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the world's most celebrated works of art, inspiring artists and viewers alike for nearly 200 years.
The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a woodblock print created by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai between 1830-33 and is the first piece in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a series of ukiyo-e prints depicting Japan's Mount Fuji from different perspectives.
Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world," Ukiyo-e refers to a style of Japanese woodblock print and painting depicting famous theatre actors, beautiful courtesans, city life, and romantic landscapes.
