Mark Maycock further elaborated on Chevreul ’ s concept of “ complementary contrasts ” in A Class- Book of Color . He defined “ complementary harmony ” as , “ an agreeable combination of colours produced by using complementary or opposite colours ... the colour that is wanting in a given colour to restore it to pure whiteness is its complement .”
Albert H . Munsell brought the colour wheel into the 20th century by constructing a three-dimensional system based on the three independent properties of colour : hue , saturation , and value . As a painter himself , Munsell wanted a logical way for artists to communicate colour . However , he was equally as hopeful about creating a colour system that would gain acceptance and use by the scientific community . Munsell ’ s colour system , the Munsell Tree , became a precursor to modern day digital HSV colour spaces and models .
