Philip Otto Runge created a three-dimensional colour globe . His goal was to establish the complete “ world of colours ”, placing the pure colours around the equator with white and black at the globe ’ s poles .
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe designed his own colour wheel . In opposition of Newton ’ s colour spectrum theory , Goethe believed that darkness was not an absence of light , but rather a distinct force that played an active role in creating hues , “ Light and darkness , brightness and obscurity , or if a more general expression is preferred , light and its absence , are necessary to the production of colour ... Colour itself is a degree of darkness .” But perhaps his most fascinating theories explore the psychological impact of different colours on mood and emotion . He suggested that colours could be either warm or cool , positive or negative , and that any combination of colours could create either a powerful , gentle or radiant atmosphere . He also inferred that emotion and other psychological factors influence the brain ’ s interpretation of colour .
