HUE & SATURATION Hue refers to colour . The artists ’ colour wheel is usually divided into 12 hues but can also be depicted with 3 , 6 , or 24 hues . Saturation refers to the purity of a hue .
On a colour wheel , the twelve (+/ - ) hues are arranged around the circle while their saturations range from grey ( 0 %) at the inside of the circle to pure colour ( 100 %) along the outside of the circle .
WARM & COOL COLOURS The colour wheel can be divided into warm and cool colours . The distinction between “ warm ” and “ cool ” has been in use since the late 18th century , and is an essential component of colour theory .
The difference between warm and cool colours is not scientific and has nothing to do with their reflective properties , light absorption , brightness , or saturation . The distinction is largely subjective and is dependent on the colour ’ s position on the colour wheel .
Warm colours are vivid and energetic - active . Cool colours are muted and calming- passive .
White , black , & grey are neither of the above and are thought to be neutral .
There is no commonly agreed upon “ coolest ” or “ warmest ” colour , but the strongest cool-warm complementary contrast is said to be between blue-green ( hex code # 34D5E3 ) and red-orange ( hex code # E34234 ).
