In Jacob Christian Schäffer ’ s , Entwurf einer allgemeinen Farbenverein , seven principal colours ( red , yellow , blue , green , brown , white and black ) were presented as families , each with its own coat of arms . The primaries , red , yellow , and blue took center place in his hierarchy .
Ignaz Schiffermüller , was one of the first to arrange the complementary colours opposite one another in Versuch eines Farbensystems : blue opposite orange ; yellow opposite violet ; red opposite green . Schiffermüller also placed a sun inside his colour circle in order to emphasize that colours were produced by nature .
