Adult Training
The County Adult Training Team comprising of Major Sandra Welburn,
Captain Darren Jones and Sergeant Major Ivor Brown prepare all new
adult volunteers for appointment as Sergeant Instructors within their
Detachments. The training follows a three stage process, a basic
introduction to the ACF, including how to wear and care for uniform,
which is followed by detailed instruction on subjects such as fieldcraft,
navigation, first aid, weapon handling and of course instructional
techniques. This is delivered through a mix of formal instruction and
practice in a practical setting conducted over a number of weekends.
The highlight is generally an adult’s first weekend spent living in the
filed under a “basha”. Potential adult volunteers then progress to the
final stage of their training which is a week long course with the
Brigade training team who put the final polish on their instructional
techniques. Here individuals mix with potential instructors from other Counties making friends within their
new “ACF family”. The training in Northumbria ACF is thorough with many adult volunteers from the
County being judged to be the best student on their courses. Applications to become an adult volunteer
are welcomed from individuals aged over 18 and no previous military experience is required. So what
are you waiting for?
First Aid
Training
From being able to deal
with a cut or burn
sustained in the kitchen
at home, to providing
essential treatment to
someone who becomes
ill, or is involved in an
accident, a sound
knowledge of First Aid is
an essential life skill that
everyone should have. The APC syllabus progressively teaches cadets how to respond to minor and
major incidents and recognises those abilities through the award of Heartstart and Youth First Aid
qualifications which are recognised by future employers. Adult volunteers also receive First Aid training
up to First Aid At Work certification. Every year cadets and adult volunteers from Northumbria ACF find
themselves in real life situations where they are able to use their knowledge to treat real casualties,
frequently being credited with saving an individual’s life. If you are an adult and want to get more
involved with First Aid Training or a senior cadet who would like to learn more then contact the County
First Aid Training Officer, Captain Darren Jones. The aim in 2015 is to win the Regional competition in
order to compete in the national final to be held at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
