MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT & CEO RAY VARA
Dear Supporter of Hawai‘i Pacific Health,
At Hawai‘i Pacific Health our vision is to transform health care as
we know it, and to do so we must expand the scope of our work
beyond the walls of our facilities. This is critical as we continue to
work toward our mission of creating a healthier Hawai‘i. Our company
is operating extremely well both in terms of our ability to provide
quality care and extending our reach into the community.
In 2018, we celebrated the opening of a new $7.9 million hybrid
suite for patients with cardiovascular conditions at Straub Medical
Center. The new state-of-the-art facility is the only one of its kind in
Hawai‘i and enables our physicians to do more complex structural
heart procedures as well as open heart surgery. The new suite combines the capabilities of a cardiac
catheterization lab with the sterile environment of an operating room, thereby enhancing patient quality
and safety.
At Pali Momi Medical Center, we opened the new Hawai‘i Pacific Health Center for Simulation and
Education. The center features high-tech manikins and classroom space to support the education
and training of Pali Momi’s health care professionals. Simulation training enables our clinicians to stay
current on the most advanced practices without compromising patient care.
During the year, Wilcox Medical Center received a $350,000 blood irradiator. This lifesaving equipment
helps both trauma and cancer patients by eliminating white cells from donated blood. Previously it took
up to two days to get irradiated blood from O‘ahu, which is time that our patients do not always have.
In the fall of 2019, Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children will be opening a new
14,000-square-foot dining room and 9,000-square-foot kitchen that will service patients, employees
and the community at large. Hours will be expanded to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it will
also feature an interactive play area for children.
The common thread to all these facility upgrades and improvements is philanthropy. Donors, like you,
help us turn these projects that were once dreams into reality. We couldn’t have done it without your
generosity and caring spirit.
Hawai‘i Pacific Health exists today as one of the state’s largest health care providers because of the
hard work of our nearly 7,000 employees and the financial commitments—past, present and future—
you have made to us and our mission. Please know that we will continue to be prudent stewards of the
resources you have entrusted to us and are grateful for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Ray Vara
