MESSAGE FROM
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
DAWN M. DUNBAR
Aloha from the Foundations
of Hawai‘i Pacific Health,
There’s something to be said for new beginnings; whether it’s welcoming new life into the
world or embarking on a fresh start later in life. Many stories we hear about at our medical
centers involve both milestones. On average, more than 6,000 babies are born every year at
Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and more than 500 babies are born every year
at Wilcox Medical Center. Equally as impactful are the more than 16,000 admissions annually at
our three acute care medical centers combined: Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Medical Center
and Wilcox Medical Center. The experience of overcoming a health challenge that may have led
to their hospitalization often gives patients and their families a new outlook on their future.
In this issue we feature Dr. Thomas Kosasa and the many new beginnings he’s created.
Dr. Kosasa has delivered more than 10,000 babies in a career that has spanned more than
four decades. His journey includes roles as a fertility specialist, educator, mentor, leader,
philanthropist, pilot and even race car driver!
Dr. Kosasa’s story is a good reminder to us all that we can contribute so much to this world.
I’m celebrating my new beginning at Hawai‘i Pacific Health by completing my first year with
the organization. This experience has been refreshing. I have also found a renewed sense of
purpose through the commitment of our philanthropy team as well as the generous board
members and donors we have the honor to work with.
As 2018 comes to an end, we hope this issue of Inspire magazine brings you joy for what you
have helped us accomplish. We are fortunate to always have a new opportunity to help heal,
invigorate and educate local families because loyal donors, like you, create it with your gifts.
Here’s to new beginnings and those defining moments that inspire us. Together we are creating
a healthier Hawai‘i!
With appreciation,
Dawn M. Dunbar
